Parent Teacher Conferences

26. January 2009 by Super Mega Dad 7 Comments

Today I had a one of THOSE parent teacher conferences for Super Michael.  Apparently, he hasn't gotten back into the groove after getting back from Winter Break a couple of weeks ago and after being out of school for 3 weeks or so, he just doesn't feel like doing his work at school and he's having a hard time focusing.  I can completely relate, because I feel the same way.  I want to be back on vacation too!

We have tried a couple of things to try to change the situation, the first being that we do homework FIRST thing when coming home instead of going straight to playing, and secondly, we're using visual things (like pennies) to help him with his math homework.  It's only been a couple of days, but I've noticed that he's getting back into the groove and instead of spending 45 minutes on a math sheet (ARGHHH), he's back down to around 5 minutes or so.

Nothing is more stressful than having to go in to talk to the teacher about problems with your child.  I stressed out about it all weekend, but tried not to let it show so that it didn't worry Super Michael.  I don't need him stressing out any more then normal about school.  I want him to enjoy school and not stress out about it like I did as a kid.  You naturally want your child to do good in school, you naturally want them to have friends and be well liked.

I think I stress out about his school life a lot more then Super Michael does, which, in retrospect is probably how it should be.  He doesn't worry too much if his school work isn't up to par (but still wants to do well), he doesn't worry too much if the other kids don't want to play with him, he just goes and finds someone else to play with, or goes and finds something else to do by himself.

Still, it's your kid, and you worry about them, of course, but in the end it usually all turns out in the end.  We worried about him in Kindergarten last year and he graduated to 1st grade and learned a lot and I am always amazed at how much he's learned.

I'm still besides myself with the AMOUNT of homework that they send home for a first grader.  Even moving at a fairly good clip, it still takes him a good hour and a half to complete all of his nightly homework.  This includes his extra handwriting practice because his handwriting is nearly as bad as mine (I can't even remember the last time that I actually hand wrote something besides a check, and even THOSE are rare with ATM cards and online banking).

I'm curious to hear from others how much homework your kids bring home on a daily basis.  Do you think it's too much, just right, or maybe they should have more?  Do your kids get bored part way through?

I think things are a little different here (Canada) than where you are, at least that's the sense I get from reading bloggers from the U.S.  My daughter starts JK in the fall, and from what I recall with my wife (pre-kids she was a Kindergarten teacher), the bulk of homework at the primary level is being read to, early literacy type stuff.

Is Michael not doing stuff in class, or is the 90 minutes comprised of work handed out specifically for at home?  I'd be surprised if it's all the latter.  I wonder if he could be encouraged to try doing more seatwork in class?  I don't know; I have no first hand experience with this, as my oldest isn't even four.  But, maybe something in my rambling helped.

@ SciFi Dad:  Hey, thanks for stopping by!

The ~90 minutes a night he does is above and beyond his classwork at school.  They do about the same amount at school.  The sheets they hand out are two sided, so one side he does at school, the other side he does at home.

They are also supposed to do language arts where they have to come up with a 5 sentance story and I'm just amazed at the structure that they should know.  I don't remember having to do anything like this in first grade.  I think they were still trying to get me to stop eating glue at that point.

I think part of this issue, from what the teacher says, is our WONDERFUL "No Child Left Behind" directive that was put in a few years back.  It REALLY pushes the kids.

Thanks again for the input!

90 minutes a night?!  That is a lot for such a young child.  I am looking at our nightly routine with Lukas (19 months today) and couldn't even imagine tring to shove 90 minutes of homework into it someday.

P.S.  My handwriting is probably as bad or worse than yours.

I can't even imagine what parents do with kids that are in all these different after school things...soccer, baseball, karate!  Arghh!  Too much to think about!

My kid doesn't have any homework because he's just four. BAAAHAHAHA! Oh, wait. I'd better shut up because I've got to deal with that yet. Cripes, I can't even get my kid to pick up all his *&#@! legos.

In first grade, my daughter had 10 minutes of homework a night (2nd grade its 15 minutes).  Some night's it takes 5 minutes, other nights - two hours, depending on her mood and the amount of distractions.  It actually took my preK daughter longer to do her homework because she refused.

In first grade, my daughter had two pretty complex book reports to do during the year as well (in addition to nightly homework) which was to be done over a four week period.

We always do our homework right when we get home, because I find they don't procrastinate as much.  They want to get it done so the yhave the rest of the night to play.

@ Dorky Dad:Yeah, by the time you get yours' in school, they'll come up with even BETTER rules.  The teacher just told me about some "new math" stuff this morning...oh boy!  I just shook my head.

@ Margaret:I think with my son, homework time would take MUCH less time if he would focus and just get the homework done.  Staring off into space takes up a LOT of time!

Complex book reports?  OH MAN!  I don't think I could handle that!
